This Open Wound Needs Salt

A week has passed since Baltimore Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff “Finkled” the potential game-tying field goal against the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game. An interesting thought crossed my mind today. Had the Ravens won the game and went to the Super Bowl, this would’ve meant so much more than simply getting a ring for Ray, Ed and T-Sizzle. This meant playing for a championship in the house that the Irsays built.

Until I lived in Maryland, I never realized how bitter Marylanders were about the Baltimore Colts leaving in 1984. Former Colts owner Bob Irsay didn’t make many friends when he moved the team in the middle of the night on March 29, 1984. I’ve spoken to people who still hate the Colts organization til this day. Fast forward to the 2000 season, the Ravens won their first Super Bowl title and the now Indianapolis Colts still did not have one. Now with both teams owning a title (although the Colts won several in Baltimore), the Ravens looked for the opportunity to completely stick it to the Colts organization. With the Colts having their worst season in decades and now possibly headed for years of rebuilding, a Ravens title in Indianapolis would’ve represented a big NFL-style middle finger!

I guess the people of Baltimore will just have to go on dreaming and wondering “What if?” Well given today’s announcement that the Ravens have hired former Colts head coach/”guy with the blank stare” Jim Caldwell as their quarterbacks coach, I wouldn’t get too hyped up for next year.

Hey, there’s always the Orioles…right?
